a nuance of nonsense

I was lying wide awake on my bed, the radium alarm clock beside my bed was showing 2 a.m. The room was dark but I could see the ceiling fan's rapidly rotating shadows in the light of the quarter moon shining high through the only window. For no reason, I closed my eyes and strained my ears but all I could hear is the ticking of the clock and distant buzz of insects in the tress beside my room window. I tried to sleep but I failed.

It was the spring semester of 2006, the second year of my under graduation.I was an on campus student, so i lived in the collage dorms. Midterms were done and the holi holidays began. Many of my friends left for home to celebrate the festival of spring, which i believe lost its resplendence of naturality to harmful artificial colours. I preferred to stay in the hostel thinking that i could save off travelling money. Two days after the holidays began, i found my self as the only human left in my whole wing. And so my story frame happened on the third day early morning. Though it was middle of spring, that day remained a little chilled owing to a cloud cover the early evening.

Coming back to the story.......I woke up slowly and opened my door. A stream of white fluorescent light flooded into my eyes and when i turned back to shield my eyes,I noticed the twilight room behind my back turned into an black hole. I walked along the slated corridor fenced with yellow steel locked doors on its either side. Our common restrooms are at the other end of this short passage which some how seemed never ending due to my slow pace. A mildly cool breeze blew from the balcony in the middle way. Now,if i remember,it used to be this balcony where i used to stare for hours at the green grass or bickering squirrels or if the luck is on, a slithering Snake!!.Shivering a little I went on.

I entered the restroom and suddenly there appeared a dark girl in front of me. She had dark eyes sunken deep in their sockets and a bulging pot belly.Her hair was unkempt and she wore yellow pyjamas. I was taken aback for a second as i believed in the denial of human presence at this time of the season and that too at this time of the hour. I saw that the girl in front me was surprised too. We quickly adjusted our faces back to 'ah!-is -it you' state as i realized that the girl standing before me is a gud friend of mine in fact i have know her all my life. She is one of those peculiar kids with bizarre interests which most people find it freaking strange. I walked past her faced with a silly smile which she returned back with a similar one after all it was my own reflection.

When i returned to my dark room i felt a slight tingle down my neck. At first I thought of as a sign to a foreboding danger later I laughed at the silly me and headed straight to bed after shutting the door behind my back and so the light. I moved under my blanket and suddenly felt a warm soft furry pillow near my leg. For a moment i felt so nice and in next moment i jumped out the bed. A creature rose to face me and two radium eyes gleamed in darkness. I shrieked a little and my BP rose.It was a CAT!!. I immediately switched on the lights and I saw this cute creamy yellow coloured cat,which until recently had been hoovering around our dorm past 3 days. I shooed it weakly though it shook its head warily it didn't not move from the blanket. It stared at me for sometime and curled back as if it was its own bed. For some reason I dropped the idea of bringing my shuttle bat to chase it away. I felt a strange sense of similarity in both of us, a feeling, of being lonely in this big world. I switched of the lights and went to sleep on my roommate's bed, ginning.

I curled in the cat's direction and kept watching it the twilight with half closed eyes.I kept thinking stuff like the cat might actually feigning sleep till i sleep so it can later browse the net on my desktop top for various rats or it might watch a Tom and Jerry show in YouTube or the cat was actually 'puss in boots' etc etc.. and so many strange blurring furry thoughts kept moving through my minds eye and when i woke up the cat was gone.
